Unbroken Curriculum: Purposeful Conversation

Intended Audience: 6-12 teachers and administrators (Some activities are appropriate for younger students.) Length: 90 minutes Key Learning Objectives:
  • Understand the concept of oracy and its origins
  • Promote oracy in the physical classroom
  • Use oracy skills online

In this course teachers will find techniques and suggestions for using the story of Louis Zamperini, an Olympic athlete taken prisoner during World War II, to teach students about the role of hope in resilience. Geography teacher Heather Fuller explains how she asks her students to engage with Zamperini's book Unbroken to develop their oral communication skills. The course starts with an introduction to oracy, the skill of expressing oneself clearly and with purpose when talking.
